I completed the compTIA A+ Exam last October 2006. I felt a great sense of pride, that after years of not studying I could have accomplished such a feat.
Now I have my own IT business and I am continuing to study with Skills Train towards my CCNA qualification.

It is surprising how at times things turn out to be. I had no knowledge about the computer. I only used the computer to write my essays and print them out, that was it. Every time I encountered the problems i.e. pressing a wrong burton and the work is lost, rebooting, I had to call my dean of studies who used to help me. Then one day, I was running late with the deadline the following and I stayed late at night to finish writing up the work. I did not put the margins properly and it could not print. Being late, I could not call for help. I was really disheartened and nearly got depressed. Then it came to my mind that, if I knew the computer, I would not be in this terrible messy as I would know the problem and work at it. So in December, 2004, I received a leaflet at my door concerning the computer studies. I was afraid to call but after a few days, I gathered the courage and called. Within few days I was told something was visiting me. I was given a test to see at which level I was in the computer, and I said, I only know how to open and close the computer and write essays on it and print them out. The tutor was understanding. When I first receied the first lessaon, it was a little bit hard and almost gave up. But the fear of calling someone whenever, I encountered the problem was a driving force. Now I am enjoying the course and I am happy that I started it.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE:
Do not get discouraged you can do it. Believe in yourself and know that there are others who have had the feeling you are experiencing. Reading through other people's stories, was great encourgement. It is good to share our experiences that is when you discouver that you are not alone. The tutors are very understanding and stand by your side all the way through.
I am not on TMA 10 and have got the momentum to go on till the end.
If others can then you can too. For "where there is a will, there is a way."

I have been studying the A+ course for just 2 weeks and I have already completed Section 1 Part A and am currently waiting for Part B. I do not have that much time to study considering that I currently work in a demanding, responsible job managing a corporate car hire account for Asda which is a big test for me at the same time. The position is about to end but it has really shown me what I am capable of; to manage this course and the job at the same time.

I managed to push myself finally to focus more on finishing the course well prepared for the exam. It's quite difficult for me as I have been working on a shift basis since I started the course. Apart from that English is not my native language so I struggled really recently to keep submitting last TMA's. But I feel now more focused know to complete CISCO TMA's quicker and with even more in-deep study.

With not having my own PC at home, I'm having to rely on the public ones at my local library in order to do my course. I am currently working on TMA 16 of the A+ section, I feel as though I've made good progress given my circumstances and all being well I will be doing my first big exam next month hopefully.

I have set up small home wireless network between my computer - desktop PC, Windows XP Professional, and my friend's laptop - PC Windows XP Media Center Edition. My desktop PC operate with wireless Belkin USB adapter (I have no wireless PCI card). My friends laptop has built in wireless card. I set up connection Ad-Hoc with sharing folders between our computers. Additionaly I share my internet connection with my friend, so she can get internet acces on her laptop by my PC. I don't really know how does it work, but it works. The biggest problem to me was to configure windows firewall. I really hope, that I get enough knowledge during my courses to understand how does it really work and why still hard reset is requested when installing some drivers (wireless belkin USB adapter). Soft reset doesn't work at all. Since my old Atari ST there are still drivers, programs reset resistant.

I feel I have 2 main achievements:
General achievements
2006/2007 achievements

General achievements:-

SURVIVING. Thought returning to studying would be ok and now older I would take things in a bit more. Had very little computer knowledge when starting the course. Defrag, emailing, internet, the basics.
I am a mother of 7 children in total, 4 of my own that live with me ( ages 13,11,7,4) and 3 step-children (14,13,11) that stay at a weekends. At 35years old and a stay at home mother for 10years, taking on these courses was a challenge, the odds were against me regarding to time and quietness. But routine, organisation and support and the will to achieve the impossible has helped.
I want to say THANK YOU tutor's for the study time table, this has become my bible! I print it of each week and note what I have studied and what amount of time I have done.
Fitting studying in is VERY hard, with a 4 yr old still at home, and noise of 4 children on week nights and then 7 on weekends. I have achieved something I did not feel I might not. Study regularly and achieve good results (average mark 90%) in my A+ course.
Now at the end I am cramming in revision from notes on week days, with time at the library and weekends studying toward new N+ course.
I also lost my grandfather April 05 and when I started the course was still grieving some what. Through hard work, routine, structure and commitment. I feel I have achievement so much and grown as much as a person this last year. I have now with the help of this course, upgraded 5 computers for friends and family (power supplies, graphics cards, memory etc) , one which was suffering from a fatal virus and would not boot up. I am helped 2 friends wireless network their laptops also.

2006/2007 achievements:-

I sadly lost my grandmother also on the 9th Oct 2006. This is a hard time now grieving for two grandparentsI am also now greiving the loss of our family pet of 17years, which we sadly lost on Jan 2007. I took two weeks in Oct 06 & Jan 07 out of any studying for personal time out. I needed it. It's now few months/weeks on; I can look back at what I have done. My assignment marks, course notes, study times, house (how tidy and clean it still is!), my routine and my family (they haven't suffered!) and ME. I personal have achieved many things than just TMA results. With starting 2007 with a TMA N+ mark of 100%.
Below is a daily flexible routine that helps me keep sane.

My daily routine:
Morning: 8:30am -12pm
School run times two children
Library visited with books (2hrs studying)
12:15pm -3pm
Creative time/educational time, Park with 4 yr old.
3-4Pm School run/ homework, evening meal prepare.
4-5pm chores and talk time with family
6-8pm Children time and bed times
8:30 – 12am quiet study time for me. (Approx. 2-3hrs)

I am achieving about 2-4 hours a day studying with flexibility around a noisy and busy family. From Sept I achieved with the wonderful help of my family and husband 20 hours of study, Oct 24 hours and 23 hours for Nov. I believe this achieved through the commitment and hard work from me and the wonderful support I have from my husband and children. My A+ and more recently N+ (Tma 8 – 100 %) marks are proof of this. This makes me so proud of myself.
These are my achievements, to someone that maybe small ones, but to me that are big ones (personal and educational). Studying around 7 children and having to work hard and take in and understand the course fully, has been stressful. You can achieve anything, if you put your mind to it. I feel I have and the odds I feel were against or should I say the “noise” of 7 children!

I work full time and do my homework at weekends so I don't have much time for anybody else. I did'nt know alot about computers when I started the course but I have now built a computer for one of my friends. I have also installed various internet which people have been having trouble with. I have just completed Part d of the course and each time my results have got better the first one I had to re-do but the last three I have passed with good results.

I do not really know if this could be classed as a typical achievement or not. Nevertheless, here's my story. I had completed 3 assignments with a very tough regime; had to fit in study with full-time work. I finished 3 assignments and then realised that, since I wouldn't be able to complete my course in time for the exams held this summer, I would have to study the new syllabus in order to be able to appear for the same examination later in the year. This, however, meant that if I did so, I would have to start all over again, from scratch. It also got me a bit frustrated because it kind of opened the flood gates over all my efforts. But after after a while, thinking that there must be something positive in it all, I got over it and now am on my way to completing my second assignment already. This has not only lifted my spirits but also given me that extra encouragement and strength to never quit or say die. I have plans to finish my course by the end of October, God willing. If I do, I'd be one of the happiest beings on planet Earth, and would have one of the biggest ever celebrations. Thanks for your time. Take care, and God bless.

During my time as a IT Student at college I had no idea of where my IT career would take me, After finsihing college and passing all my courses I had a good through understanding of computers and networks, this gave me the confidence, skills and knowlegde needed to develop futher. Not knowing what to do I approched skills train which helped me with making a decision about where I was going with my IT career. Skills train then gave me all the guidaness and information I needed to develop further in this field. I have now started the A+ course and with my current knowledge and skills of computing I am now able to say that thanks to skills train I will complete this course with full condifdence and will achieve the best results possible. As for progressing on futher I am now able to also look for employment with a updated CV and able to sell my self to employers knowing what is needed for this field at the moment after being guided from skills train. After sucessfully completing the A+ I will be moving on to N+ and by this time I would have hopefully put my foo into the IT industry as a Engineer working to develop and gain some expirence. With my current timetable of also doing maths and english and being employed as a customer service assistant at Sainsburys I am able to continue with my course as I am able to work under pressure and come out with good results as this shows on my first tutor marked assignment. Skills train have been excellent in giving me a boost and helping me make a decsion about where I want to take my IT carreer and how far I want to go. the tutors have all got a background knowledge of my current skills and expertise in IT and have helped me as a new student with skills train to complete work andhelp with any trouble I have. I hope to achieve all my goals during my time at Skills train and hope to pass both courses with full confidence and also seek employment for further development and expirence which skills train will give me as they have done so far.
